How to Choose a Moving Company You Can Trust

The questions to ask a removalist before you book, the red flags to walk away from, and how to compare quotes fairly.

You are about to hand a stranger everything you own. Price matters, but it should not be the only thing you look at. A few minutes of checking now saves a very long day later.

Questions to ask before you book

Tick these off as you go. A good mover will answer every one without hesitating.

Red flags

  • A price that is far below everyone else with no explanation.
  • A large cash deposit up front, or cash only on the day.
  • No written quote, or a quote with no detail about what it covers.
  • They never ask what you are moving. If they do not know the job, they cannot price it.
  • No business name, no address and a mobile number as the only contact.

A clear quote starts with a clear picture of the job.

Comparing quotes fairly

Two quotes only compare if they describe the same job. Give every mover the same inventory, the same access details and the same date. Then check each quote covers the same things: crew size, truck, travel time and any extras. A cheap hourly rate with a three hour minimum and a call out fee is often not the cheap option.

When to pay

Be careful about paying the whole amount before the work is done. With MOVA, your payment is held securely and released to the mover only once the job is confirmed complete with your PIN. You can read more on our trust and safety page.
